YGL is proud to announce that an article written by the YGL Institute for Public Policy has made the front cover of The Federal Manager. The article entitled, "Operation Opportunity: How to Leverage Young Feds' Attitudes to Encourage Retention," discusses techniques for attracting and keeping young talent, especially focusing on Generation Y. The article should highlight for managers ways to challenge the younger generation to encourage the development of engaged and successful employees, thus leading to employees who are happy with their jobs and who provide high-quality work. This article is just one example of how YGL provides a voice for young leaders just like you!

The American Council for Technology (ACT) is sponsoring a series called “Leadership at all Levels” featuring senior government leaders who will share their experiences and lessons learned during their government service. These discussions will provide the participants with an opportunity to learn the insights from senior executives who have gained through their long and illustrious careers. Participants will have an opportunity to share their perspectivesand learn what they can do to advance their careers while also building an invaluable network among their peers. The audience for these discussions will be comprised of government employees who are currently between the GS 7-12 level with less than 5 to 7 years in the federal service. The ideal participant would be a bright and ambitious individual interested in a career of significant leadership and contributions in the public sector.

The next session will feature Steve Kempf who is the Commissioner of Federal Acquisition Service.

The first session will be held March 9, 2011 at the Crystal Gateway Marriot located at 1700 Jefferson Davis Highway, Arlington VA. The discussion will begin at 5:00 pm and last until 6:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served. There is no registration fee to participate in this event, but registration is limited and on a first come first serve basis. Immediately preceding the event attendees will be able to network and attend ACT-IAC’s 3rd Annual Community Fair.

The session will take place on Monday, November 15 at the New Executive Office Building from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. and will include representatives from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) as well as the Performance Improvement Council (PIC). Please refer to the attached document for details regarding the session and how to apply for one of the 10 spots available. Applications must be received by COB on Thursday, November 11.

In support of Jeff Zients (Chief Performance Officer of the United States) and President Obama’s Accountable Government Initiative, we are soliciting your help to provide feedback on Performance.gov before it goes live. YGL Seeks Volunteers for 2010 Workathon on Saturday, May 15, 2010, D.C.-based non-profit “Hands On DC will hold its annual Workathon where volunteers spend the day improving the physical condition of DC public schools. YGL’s D.C. and Bethesda chapters will be teaming up once again to participate in this event. We are in need of enthusiastic volunteers who are interested in donating part of their Saturday to make a difference in the D.C. community. Work typically involves projects such as painting, cleaning, and landscaping. Volunteers are not required to donate or collect donations but it is appreciated. Donations have enabled Hands On DC to provide over $570,000 in scholarships as well as purchase supplies (i.e. paint, mulch, etc,) for use during the annual event. Individuals who raise $50 or more will receive a free Hands On DC t-shirt. Last year we raised more than $800. This year, we hope to raise more than $1,000.
