Member FAQs

(1) I'm "XX" years old. Do I qualify as a young government leader?

Young Government Leaders (YGL) does not have a specific age limit to be eligible for the group. YGL identifies potential members as those that identify themselves as "young government leaders." Generally, our members range from 22-40, but we accept members of all ages.

(2) Who else will be joining as a YGL member?

We are seeing public sectors specializing in acquisition management, contracting specialists, financial management, and human resources in large numbers.  Our membership has grown in accountability and inspector general personnel professionals as well.  Finally, we continue to see large numbers of information technology specialists joining YGL.  These disciplines go across more than 30 agencies in federal service.

As YGL continues to grow outside the DC metropolitan area, we are seeing increasing numbers of state and local public sectors professionals.

While most of our members are in the Executive Branch, we also welcome professionals who work in the legislative branch too.

Finally, we encourage academic and private sector professionals to join as well.  One of our goals is to advocate for the ability of government professionals to have opportunities to come in and out of government.  We value this perspective  too.

(3) I work for "X" (state government, city government, non-profits, private contractor, etc). Can I become a member of YGL?

Yes! YGL membership is open to federal, state, and local government employees. We are also looking for partnerships and associations where we can work with relevant outside groups (i.e., our partnership with Young AFCEA). Please contact if you are interested in forming a partnership or association.

(4) I am a federal employee who works outside of D.C. Can I become a member?

Yes, we would love for you to become a member. While you may not be able to attend the events in D.C., you should get valuable information through our email updates. Further, we are in the process of developing more regional chapters of YGL and are always looking for people to help get them started. If interested, please contact admin@younggovernmentleaders.org.

(5) I am interested in YGL. How much does it cost to join?

You can become a supporter of YGL and receive updates. If you're interested in becoming a member, then a donation of $35 is most appreciated.  Membership gives you access to exclusive events, opportunities to earn scholarships, access to national awards, fellowships, resume assistance, and discounts on products offered by our sponsors.

(6) YGL looks like a great organization. How can I get involved?

(7) I work for "X" and I am working on a conference/project/job opening that I think would interest YGL members. How do I let your members know?

(8) I do not consider myself a young government leader, but would love to help out. What can I do?

Of course you can help! YGL needs people like you to help promote YGL and provide resources. Please spread the word to people who you think would be interested in YGL membership. Further, please pass along any information (job opportunities, rotations, conferences, etc.) that you think would be relevant to YGL at admin@younggovernmentleaders.org.
